Cooling Water Treatment: Clean, High-Quality, Reliable
Cooling water quality is a key factor in energy efficiency, operational and process reliability, as well as maintenance and operating costs—in production facilities as well as in system circuits and their components. ONI provides a comprehensive cooling water treatment solution designed to measurably reduce scale, corrosion, and microbial contamination while stabilizing operations over the long term. With ONI-AquaClean, you can achieve top-quality cooling water without the use of biocides and improve water quality in a short time.
- Top-quality cooling water without biocides: Reduces bacteria, algae, and fungi and combats biofilm—without the need for chemical biocide additives.
- Removes particles & turbidity – fast-acting: Removes solid particles ranging from coarse to fine; in practical applications, no particles were detectable after a short time and the bacterial load was drastically reduced (e.g., 99.9%).
- Less corrosion & reduced chemical requirements: Ozonation oxidizes dissolved metals, ultrafiltration removes oxidation products → lower corrosivity, reduced use of corrosion inhibitors.
How ONI-AquaClean improves cooling water
For cooling water to function reliably in industrial systems over the long term, water quality, materials, and operating conditions must be compatible. This is exactly what ONI-AquaClean is designed for:
- Comprehensive water treatment in a single system: AquaClean addresses microbiological contamination (bacteria/viruses/algae/fungi) and solid particles (coarse to fine grains) through a holistic approach—this reduces the root causes of problems rather than merely treating symptoms.
- Biocide-free for stable hygiene & process reliability: The goal is top-quality cooling water without the use of biocides—this reduces the effort and risk associated with chemical handling and keeps water quality more stable over the long term.
- Measurement & control loops for controllable operation: Integrated measurement loops (including conductivity, pH, redox, flow rate) provide the basis for stepwise, controlled cooling water treatment—operators gain transparency into the system’s condition and can take informed action.
ONI-AquaClean significantly improves water quality
- Ozonation + ultrafiltration reduces corrosivity: Dissolved metals are oxidized by ozonation, and the oxidation products are then removed via ultrafiltration—this reduces the corrosivity of the cooling water and can reduce the need for corrosion inhibitors.
- Rapid, measurable improvements reduce operating costs and downtime risks: In practical applications, water quality has been significantly improved in a short time (e.g., particles undetectable after a short time, bacterial load greatly reduced)—this has a direct impact on energy efficiency, maintenance costs, and system availability.
From filtration to dosing technology
ONI offers system solutions for water treatment and water management in cooling systems ranging from the smallest to the largest capacities. In practice, we supply systems for cooling capacities ranging from 5 to 150,000 kW. The entire spectrum of requirements—from corrosion protection and filtration to biological protection—is covered by cost-effective system solutions.
Water quality can be dramatically improved in a relatively short period of time. In practical applications, no solid particles were detectable after just one week of operation. For example, the biological load in the cooling water was reduced from 100,000 CFU/ml*) to approximately 100 CFU/ml—a reduction of 99.9%! The target maximum value for cooling water is 10,000 CFU/ml. Another positive effect is the oxidation of dissolved metals through ozonation. The resulting oxidation products are then removed from the water via ultrafiltration. This effect significantly reduces the corrosiveness of the cooling water and thus reduces the need for corrosion inhibitors accordingly.
If a biocide-free operating concept makes sense for the project, a particularly effective combination of cooling water treatment, filtration, and tailored water treatment is required. We assess water quality in the context of your plants and cooling systems and design measures to ensure water stability is maintained even under everyday operating conditions.
The goal is optimal cooling water quality that reduces the potential for deposits and malfunctions and eases operational burdens—with a solution tailored to your systems, materials, and service processes.
Monitoring & Control
Installation alone is not enough to ensure long-term effective cooling water treatment—stable management during operation is crucial. Through monitoring and control, we make relevant water parameters and operating conditions transparent, detect deviations early on, and reliably maintain water quality within the target range. This reduces risks from corrosion and deposits and ensures the long-term performance of your cooling systems.
We provide comprehensive consulting: from selecting appropriate measurement points, setting limit values, and defining control strategies to integrating the system into existing systems and service processes. The result is a practical solution tailored to your facilities that reduces operational burden and supports optimal cooling water treatment over the long term.

Cooling water treatment encompasses the complete solution—that is, the technology, design, and operational strategy—to maintain stable water quality. Cooling water treatment is a component of this and primarily refers to water treatment measures (e.g., adjusting water parameters) to prevent corrosion and scale buildup.
Closed systems typically focus on corrosion protection, low contamination, and stable operating parameters over long periods of time. Open systems (e.g., those with cooling towers) are more susceptible to environmental influences and also require consistent management of biofilms and microbiological risks.
Monitoring provides transparency regarding relevant water parameters and operating conditions and identifies deviations at an early stage. An appropriate control system keeps the parameters within the target range, thereby supporting optimal treatment, reducing risk peaks, and easing the operational burden.
Typical information includes details on facilities and systems (open/closed), materials, operating profiles, water quality (e.g., conductivity/pH depending on the system), previous issues, and service and maintenance procedures. The better the data foundation, the more effectively measures and services can be tailored to specific needs.
